August 31, 1973 – The Rolling Stones released their 11th British (13th U.S.) studio album Goats Head Soup. The record topped the Billboard 200 for four consecutive weeks and delivered classics like the #1 ballad “Angie” and the funk-driven “Doo Doo Doo Doo Doo (Heartbreaker)”.
Highlights:
Recorded at Jamaica’s Dynamic Sound Studios during the band’s tax exile years.
Blended dark grooves, voodoo imagery, and tender ballads.
Tracks like “Winter” and “Coming Down Again” showcase Jagger’s emotive vocals, while “Star Star” stirred controversy for its provocative lyrics.
Despite mixed early reviews, the album has since been recognized as a rich, emotional Stones record following Exile on Main Street.
Cover:Designed by Ray Lawrence, photographed by David Bailey, featuring Mick Jagger in gauzy fabric—instantly iconic.
Legacy:Though overshadowed by the four masterpieces before it, Goats Head Soup remains a Stones essential, balancing swagger with surprising vulnerability.
